Rainbow (also known as Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow or Blackmore's Rainbow) are a British rock band led by guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. Estabilished in 1975.
By 1973, Blackmore had steered Deep Purple through a significant personnel change, with Ian Gillan and Roger Glover being replaced by David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes. However, the new members were keen to add new musical styles and Blackmore found his request to record the Steve Hammond-penned 'Black Sheep of the Family' with 'Sixteenth Century Greensleeves' turned down by the band. He decided to record the song with Ronnie James Dio instead, using Dio's band ELF (3) as additional musicians. He enjoyed the results, and a full album, billed as Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow was recorded between February and March 1975 at Musicland Studios in Munich, Germany. The band name was inspired by the Rainbow Bar and Grill in Hollywood.
After the release of three studio albums and an extensive world tour in 1977–78, Blackmore decided that he wanted to take the band in a new commercial direction away from the 'sword and sorcery' theme. Dio did not agree with this change and left Rainbow. Together with then new vocalist Graham Bonnet, Blackmore scored a hit single with “Since You Been Gone”.
After more lineup changes and albums, Ritchie disbanded Rainbow in early 1984 to rejoin the reunited Deep Purple.
He resurrected Rainbow once again in early 1994, just after leaving Deep Purple for good. However, Blackmore turned his attention to his long-time musical passion, Renaissance and medieval music. Rainbow was put on hold once again after playing its final concert in Esbjerg, Denmark in 1997. Blackmore, together with his partner Candice Night as vocalist then formed the Renaissance-influenced Blackmore's Night.
Against all expectations, Blackmore reformed Rainbow, with an all-new line-up, in late 2015. Blackmore announced that he would play 'all rock' concerts in the summer of 2016 under the banner of 'Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow', his first rock shows since 1997. The new Rainbow line-up was announced on November 6, 2015. It featured Lords Of Black singer Ronnie Romero, Stratovarius keyboardist Jens Johansson, Blackmore’s Night drummer David Keith and bassist Bob Nouveau (Bob Curiano).

O grupo Rainbow começou em 1975 como um projeto do lendário Ritchie Blackmore, ex-guitarrista do Deep Purple, que chamou para acompanhá-lo os integrantes de uma até então praticamente desconhecida banda Elf. O nome escolhido para a banda foi Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow (para aproveitar a fama do ex-Deep Purple), mais tarde mudado para apenas Rainbow. Possivelmente este nome foi tomado de um clube de Los Angeles em que Blackmore e a banda Elf costumavam tocar (o Elf havia feito a abertura de alguns shows do Deep Purple).

A formação inicial, que gravou um disco com o nome de Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, contava com Ronnie James Dio no vocal (segundo vocalista do Black Sabbath e que mais tarde viria a seguir uma bem sucedida carreira solo), Craig Grubber no baixo, Gary Driscoll na bateria e Mickey Soule nos teclados.
Obviamente sendo uma banda de músicos experientes e conhecidos não tiveram que galgar degraus em sua carreira, se tornando imediatamente aceita pelos fãs do hard rock europeu (posição que seria mudada mais tarde com a mudança da banda para os Estados Unidos e a escolha pela música que agradasse ao público americano).
Os egos gigantescos de Blackmore e Dio rapidamente gerariam atritos com os outros componentes. Logo após a gravação do primeiro disco houveram diversas mudanças de formação. A banda viria a se estabilizar novamente com Cozzy Powell na bateria (mais tarde no Black Sabbath), Jimmy Bain no baixo e Tony Carey nos teclados. Com esta formação lançaram um álbum ao vivo (On Stage) e o segundo álbum de estúdio da banda, Rainbow Rising, em 1976. Esta formação foi a mais duradoura da banda e a mais aclamada pelo seu público antigo.
O próximo álbum a ser lançado seria Long Live Rock and Roll, em 1978. Com certeza o mais difícil da carreira da banda, pois após o início das gravações seguiram-se problemas entre Blackmore e os outros integrantes. Jimmy Bain é demitido e seu substituto, Mark Clark, dura apenas algumas semanas na banda, sendo logo substituído por Bob Daisley (que viria a tocar com Uriah Heep, Gary Moore, Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne e Yngwie Malmsteen). Como Bob foi contratado apenas para a turnê o próprio Blackmore gravou o baixo no disco. Tony Carey também foi substituído por David Stone. Após uma curta turnê a banda se separa oficialmente e Dio inicia sua bem sucedida carreira solo (acompanhado pelo baixista Jimmy Bain). Aparentemente Blackmore desejava seguir uma musicalidade menos clássica, fazer canções mais assimiláveis pelo mercado americano, abandonar a temática medieval e fazer canções românticas, tendo sido apoiado apenas por Cozy Powell.
Em 1980 Blackmore reformulou a banda, lançando Down to Earth, com Cozy Powell na bateria, Roger Glover no baixo, Don Airey nos teclados e o desconhecido Graham Bonnet nos vocais. A mudança no som da banda prova ter sido válida pelo menos comercialmente e o Rainbow inicia sua fase de maior vendagem. Após a saída de Cozzy Powell (substituído por Boby Rondinelly, que mais tarde iria para o Black Sabbath) e a entrada de Joe Lynn Turner (que mais tarde participaria do Deep Purple) no lugar de Grahan Bonnet lançam em 1981 um outro álbum no mesmo estilo. A mesma formação (incrível) lança Straight Between the Eyes em 1983 e após a substituição de Boby Rondinelly por Chuck Burgi lançam Bet Out Of Shape em 1984.
Em virtude da reunião do Deep Purple em 1985 a banda Rainbow foi extinta até o lançamento de Stranger in Us All de 1995. O disco deveria ser um trabalho solo de Blackmore mas o apelo de usar o nome Rainbow foi maior. A banda formada por Doogie White nos vocais, Greg Smith no baixo, John O'Reilly na bateria e Paul Morris nos teclados, embora não apresentasse nenhuma ligação com a banda antiga (a não ser o guitarrista, claro) foi batizada novamente de Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow.
