4. Audix' latest kickass mix of Chrono Trigger

Pretty much; Greg writes:

'I've always loved the Ocean Palace source tune, and felt that there was a lot of potential for development into an epic electro/orchestral/rock style, so I attempted to do just that with this mix. Little bit of self-indulgent keyboard soloage (sp?) at 3:15 for kicks, and the original sample makes a brief appearance as well. Also, special thanks go to avaris for the title.'

This one's pretty hottastic, and all the judges could really critique were the relatively static dynamics; everything else is spot-on, and might be Greg's best work yet. Granted, he's only got two other mixes on the site, but both of them are excellent as well. JJT writes:

'i'm still in love with that piano segue. there is plenty of personalization going on here, while still keeping Ocean Palace at the heart of the arrangement. in that sense, this is textbook OCR. i also have respect for just about anyone who can write a decent bassline. production does the job for me. i can hear everything i'm supposed to hear clearly enough.
blah blah blah, yes.'

Four pretty easy blah-blah-blah yesses from the panel; Audix has major skills and pairs them up with a respect for both arrangement and variety. We've had some absolutely fantastic mixes lately, and this one is no exception; I strongly recommend you all aqueously transgress as soon as humanly possible.

What's this? A highly technical electronica CT ReMix that's not Schala, from a first-time mixer at that? J:/Drive linked me to a file hosted on http://www.planetskill.com, which suggests a potential affiliation with or at least knowledge of Mr. AE, not at all surprising as this arrangement shares more than a passing resemblance to his style of chopped, effected, manipulated mixage with excellent engineering and energetic pace. Similar to Digimatic's CV2 ReMix, I can say that this is what one might have expected had AE taken on the very same theme. Regardless of the background goings-on and who sounds like who, it's damn good shit. This is a bit longer stuff, actually, and for five and a half minutes, beginning and ending with the ticking clock from CT's title screen, the title music is presented in an electronic & electrified context, with layered, distorted, and bitcrushed drums flying every which way and more stop-and-go tricks and trips than you can shake a stick at. Even if shaking sticks is your forte. It's great to hear the title theme, and not one of the more commonly chosen tracks, given this sort of red-carpet treatment and attention to detail. Love how the kick drum drops out and the rolling snare gets a sort of solo, preceding some 'CD player is whacked'-style skippage that intros into some elaborate mutations. No one can criticize AE, Digimatic, and now J:/Drive of having drum tracks that sit on their asses, this much is certain. Whether this much motion and playfulness in a drum track is your cup of tea or not in large will dictate your appreciation of their work (not that the other elements aren't solid, polised, and well-varied too) - I for one am always up for drumlines and/or basslines that don't let the melody boss them around too much and avoid autopilot. Highly recommended.
